Hans Barth, the Berliner Tageblatt’s correspondent in Italy, fell in love with the country’s wines and taverns. In 1908 he wrote Osteria: A Spiritual Guide to Italian Taverns, introduced with an ecstatic preface by Gabriele D’Annunzio. Practically unknown outside Italy and never translated, it’s a lost map of a cheerful, boozy Italy that I’m bringing into English for the first time—follow along at Osteria.
